Exhale... Update received.

Nurse just let us know that Dr Mackenzie is currently placing the graft and that they did, in fact, use titanium cabling to assist with the fusion. As told by Dr Campbell in our pre-surgical visit, if the composition of Kial's vertebrae were not sufficient, they would possibly have to go with the bone graft only. Had this been the case, it would have likely meant additional time in the halo. Right now we are anticipating him being in the halo for approximately three months.

They should be closing the incision soon and we should get a report from Drs Mackenzie and Campbell, as well as the anesthesiologist.

Next stop.. PICU.

  2. Oh wow! Very good news about the titanium cable. Less time in the halo means better muscle tone, I would suppose. Thank you for these precious updates.

Made a sweet potato pie today, using the recipe David sent us. Turned out well and got the feeling Kial's op would do the same.

    Still with you!

  3. Hi Lisa & Eric-

So glad to head everything is going so well!!! I think he will adjust very quickly. This first night may be hard- with Shanti's surgeries sometimes I just had to keep repeating to myself in my head, 'it will get better... it will get better,' Somehow that helped me- each day was remarkably better than the one before. Time is on your side!

    take care- Heather
